School admissions in Delhi are hard to navigate. Few names carry as much respect and generational loyalty as the Modern School network. At its base is Raghubir Singh Junior Modern School (RSJMS) on Humayun Road, New Delhi, the stepping stone into one of India's best-known school systems. The school's official website is a good first stop for any parent considering it.
History and Legacy
Modern School is a century-old institution known for bringing a global approach to teaching and learning in India. RSJMS was established in 1961 as the primary wing of Modern School, Barakhamba Road.
It is named after its founder, Lala Raghubir Singh, born in Delhi on 5 September 1895. His outlook was shaped by his father, Rai Bahadur Sultan Singh, a respected and enlightened social figure. Sultan Singh's home in Kashmiri Gate was an open house for the leading national figures of the time, an atmosphere of intellectual and cultural exchange that shaped the school's founding values. Today the school combines that heritage with new teaching practices. Read more on its About Us page.
The Modern School Network
Parents often ask how the branches relate. RSJMS is the direct primary feeder to the senior branch, which is why a seat here is so sought after.
- Raghubir Singh Junior Modern School, Humayun Road: the primary wing of the Barakhamba Road branch, from Nursery to Class P5 (Grade 5).
- Modern School, Barakhamba Road: in central Delhi on a 25-acre campus. Students who finish primary at RSJMS move here.
- Modern School, Vasant Vihar: a sister school and an independent entity, covering primary and secondary on one campus.
The Other Branches page explains how the campuses fit together.
Academics
RSJMS builds strong foundations in literacy, numeracy, values and life skills through an interactive, learner-centred approach. It follows CBSE guidelines and the NCERT curriculum, which is regularly reviewed and adapted to students' different talents. See the Academics page for more.
Subjects and languages
- Classes P1 to P5: English, Hindi, Mathematics, Environmental Science and Computer Science.
- Classes P4 and P5: students can learn the basics of a third language: Spanish, French, German or Sanskrit.
